Ethics Institute Hosts Moral Philosophy Workshop

The hosted its 7th annual earlier this month, featuring presentations from seven invited scholars on their active research in moral or political philosophy, as well as the engaged participation of seven invited graduate and postdoctoral students.

鈥淭he presented research addressed both perennial and unmistakably timely questions,鈥 says , the Hans 鈥80 and Kate Morris Director of the Ethics Institute, who organized the Nov. 6-7 event along with Assistant Director .

Some of the foundational issues examined included whether a promise to do wrong can be binding, and whether wronging is best understood as a rights violation or a lack of due regard, says Rose, an associate professor of government. 

鈥淪peaking directly to the present moment, other presentations examined how features of search engines pose challenges for meeting the informational needs of a well-functioning democracy, and whether virtuous democratic citizens ought to prioritize the continuation of their democracies even at the cost of their policy preferences,鈥 she says.

The invited faculty and students traveled to Hanover from universities across the U.S. and the U.K., including Boston University, Harvard University, Oxford University, Stanford University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Virginia, Washington and Lee University, Washington University in St. Louis, the University at Buffalo, the University of Leeds, the University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University.

Three of the workshop sessions were chaired by faculty of the and four by members of the .

鈥淭he annual workshop is an embodiment of the fruitful collaborative relationship between the philosophy and government departments,鈥 says Rose.
