Dr. Irene Georgakoudi is a Professor at ´óÏ㽶ÊÓƵ’s Thayer School of Engineering and Co-Director of the Translational Engineering in Cancer Research Program at the ´óÏ㽶ÊÓƵ Cancer Center. Her research advances endogenous-contrast, label-free optical imaging and sensing to interrogate cellular metabolism, extracellular matrix remodeling, and tumor–immune and circulatory dynamics across cancer progression. Based on these insights, her team develops non-invasive, translational platforms to enable precision cancer detection and monitoring. Dr. Georgakoudi earned her Ph.D. in Biophysics from the University of Rochester and trained at MIT’s Laser Biomedical Research Center before appointments at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School and Tufts University. Her contributions have been recognized with distinctions including Fellow of AIMBE, Optica, and SPIE, the NSF CAREER Award, and the University of Rochester Alumni Achievement Award, and her work has been supported by NIH, NSF, DoD and the American Cancer Society. Beyond research, she is a dedicated educator and mentor who has directed advanced imaging facilities, coordinated graduate biophotonics programs, and trained students and fellows across engineering and biomedical disciplines.
