Abstract: By harnessing effects such as superposition and entanglement, quantum computers could solve problems that classical computers cannot handle. Although building a large-scale quantum computer capable of rivaling today鈥檚 supercomputers remains a major challenge, recent years have seen considerable improvements in our ability to build small superconducting quantum processors and run simple algorithms on them. In this talk, I will review some of the fundamental concepts that allow quantum computers to outperform their classical counterparts. I will then present the basic building blocks of superconducting qubits and how these components are operated, discuss recent developments in the field, and highlight some of the challenges that lie ahead.
